Having read the aforementioned book authored by Dr. Twitty Styles, I found it to be an easy read with a great story line. It follows the life of a person who was driven to excellence both personally and professionally. It chronicles the experiences of a young colored boy who was invisible to the white power structure of those who resided in the small town of Farmville, Virginia, in Prince Edward County, a county that was integral to the successful Supreme Court case of Brown vs the Board of Education regarding the separate but equal clause of the constitution of the United States.Dr. Styles’ perseverance was instilled in him by his father Peter Styles, a single father whose wife Bertha, a Black woman, died when Dr. Styles, who was the youngest of his siblings, was three years old. Unfortunately, Dr. Styles has no memory of his mother. However, his older sibling provided as much information as they could regarding their mother. His two older sisters were attentive to all his needs until Peter Styles remarried years later to his stepmother Carroll. Peter Styles loved his children and made sure that they were well taken care of. Interestingly though, Peter Styles was born white but raised by a black family named Styles, the name he chose rather than his birth surname of Lindsey.Peter Styles successfully raised 8 children all of whom had stories as told by Dr. Styles on their unique upbringing. The one thing that Peter Styles instilled in his children was to get an education as that was the one thing that couldn’t be taken away from them. Additionally, his mantra was "don’t let anyone piss on you"!!Dr. Styles’ interest in science was formed as a young high school student who became fascinated when his high school class began the dissection of frogs. Unfortunately, his school had limited resources due to the unequal dissemination of learning materials from the white power structure of that time. The textbooks were second hand from the white schools. Therefore, special care had to be taken to preserve the functionality of the books, as such, Dr. Styles carefully wrapped his textbooks with brown paper for protection. Fortunately, his teachers were dedicated and determine to provide the best education possible for their student as they were the future and through them progress could be achieved. The life experiences that Dr. Styles endured throughout his journey toward the achievement of a Ph.D. and the many awards and philanthropic contributions he made is a testament to his strong will and timely circumstances that shaped the trajectory of his life. As a Korean War veteran, Dr Styles is keenly aware of the sacrifice’s he and his peers of that era contributed to this country as some of them made the ultimate sacrifice. As such, I want to highly recommend this book as a testament on what it takes to overcome obstacles to reach a goal through hard work and perseverance!!Submitted by: Gregory Styles, nephew.
