Description

Set in turn of the century Japan in the world of the Noh theater, and in Paris during the heady days when French Impressionism was the avant-garde, this heartbreaking, beautifully written novel tells of a young Japanese artist who sacrifices everything: family, love and wealth for his art. A Master Noh mask carver dedicates his life to his art, turning his back on love after a series of tragic events leaves him devastated. Kiyoki, his only son, defies his father and the demands of cultural tradition to follow his dream of becoming a painter in the western style. Kiyoki journeys to Paris, where he lives the life of an exile, unable to break the bonds of tradition, until he finds his heart leads him back to Japan, where he at last discovers himself as an artist.

I just finished The Mask Carver's Son and this will be added to my list of all time favorites. Alyson Richman is an amazing writer. The scenes she sets are so deep and detailed that I felt I was watching a movie, rather than reading a novel. I could see the colors the main character used in his paintings, smell the air of Kyoto and Paris, feel the touch of snowflakes on my face. I lived in Japan when I was a child and this book brought all the beauty and tradition that I saw around me every day. From the thatched roofs of the farm houses to the snow shining on the peaks of the mountain to the kimono and tabi that the people wore. As I neared the end of the book, I started reading slower so I could stay with the character Yamamoto Kiyoki a little longer. I understood the difficult choices he had to make on whether to remain with the traditions of his ancestors or to follow his dream. I have been in similar situations and it is never easy. Please take time to read this book. I think you will like it.
