Description

Damien Jurado is every character in every Damien Jurado song. He is the gun, the purple anteater, the paper wings, the avalanche, the air show disaster, Ohio, the ghost of his best friend's wife. It is a universe unto its own, with it's own symbolism, creation myth, and liturgy. You might go as far as to call it a religion, and your religion is a character in his religion.

Occasionally you come across an artist or album you never heard before but feels like discovering a brand new season, musically speaking. Like each song wakes you up to a brand new meaning of music. This is one of those moments. The album kicks off with Magic Number which sounds like a beautiful musical chaos, a sense of angst coupled with a readiness for what the future holds, like leaving something behind. Metallic Cloud continues with this kind of hopeful fervency crashing against the countering stormy waves of reality. There is something wild about this album overall like you're riding on the back of a horse behind a native american soul who delivers you across the land that only they know, somewhere out among the desert and orange rock. Silver Timothy and Donna being prime examples of this kind of aura. From the moment Jurado utters the name 'Katherine' you find yourself at the piercing emotional doorway of this song. Silver Katherine is a rare song that almost conjures up a momentary tear of emotion before the song has even unfolded. Silver Joy is almost like a perfect day with Katherine. Suns In Our Mind closes out with a kind of atmosphere like a parent with children on a bed early sunday morning where a kind of sweet family chaos ensues. This album will remind you of what the potential music has when it's being honest and when the artist understands how to truly paint a new mood and experince with each individual song. Damien Jurado is one of the few artists that can accomplish such a feat.
